Taylor Swift is loved by many, but she is not loved by all.  Some people are fans at Lincoln Middle School, but some are not. What are students’ and teachers’ opinions on Swift?  The viewpoints vary.

Why do some dislike Taylor Swift? Elijah Thompson, a 7th grade student at LMS, states, “I don’t like her because her music is cringe.” This is one reason why some people dislike her.

Taylor Swift is someone who lots of people would call loyal to her fans. She comes out with a new album or old (Taylor’s version) almost every year. Lots of fans admire her for her song lyrics. Mr. McDaniel, mainly known as LMS 7th grade science teacher, states, “I enjoy the composition the most. The word choice is amazing, and I truly believe that words have power. She uses that power to spread love, hope, awareness, compassion and empathy to millions of people.”

“It’s me hi, I’m the problem it’s me,” sang by Taylor Swift. In contrast to her fans, some people do not approve of this celebrity’s lifestyle. A 7th grade student at LMS, Jillian DeYoung states her opinions on the matter: “I think she’s both overrated and over hated because I do not think she deserves to be the top artist on Spotify.  I also think she does not deserve the hate she gets.” Taylor Swift has been in the top 20 carbon emissions before, causing people to have mixed feelings about her. (newsweek.com) . Swift’s private jet flights have produced over 80 tons of carbon dioxide. Jillian also states, “No not really, I mean the carbon emissions,” after  being asked  how she feels about why people are such strong Swifties.

In support, Taylor Swift has achieved great things. The 34-year-old became the first artist to win album of the year four times in a row at the 2024 Grammys setting a new record. Though these could be possible reasons why most people like her, some people also like her for her personality and music. Jillian DeYoung addresses her opinion by stating this,

“She has some songs that I like but I dislike a lot of her songs, but she has a good personality.”

After all the controversy it seems Swift’s reputation is very bittersweet.  Even though Taylor Swift has fans and anti- fans, she still decides to go on as a popstar and strive to be the best she can be. In conclusion, though people can hate her all they want, she “shakes it off.”

Are Stanleys Worth the Money?

By Charlotte Cederberg

Did you know that the Seattle-based company that makes the Stanley cups brand has confirmed that the cups have lead in them? This information was a popular topic of controversy in the fall of 2023 but has now faded.  The popularity of the Stanley cup, though, is still strong.

First, Stanley cups were all over social media because so many people wanted them. Then, the oversized tumblers were back in the spotlight over fears they contain lead. “Our engineering and supply chain teams are making progress on innovative, alternative materials for use in the sealing process” (www.today.com). Since the main source of lead exposure in the United States comes from inhaling dust contaminated by paint chips, exposure to lead will not happen from contact with Stanley cups. The lead is part of the insulation, not part of the cup touched by people.

Are the popular Stanley cups worth the cost? They can cost from $35-$70, which is quite expensive for a water bottle. Charles Lindsey is a associate professor of market at the University at Buffalo School of Management. He says it’s just human nature to want something new or special to have in safe keep. “We seek out novel experiences, and while that could mean a trip to somewhere we’ve never been, it could also mean collecting different cups,” (www.news.yahoo.com). “From a consumer behavior standpoint, we are always incorporating variety and new things into our lives.” That could be why we like Stanley cups so much or maybe it’s just the idea of the thirst quencher since it has so many colors.

Stanley cups work and keep drinks cold because of thermal insulation technology. The cup is made of two layers of stainless steel, with a vacuum between them. This acts as an amazing thermal insulator, preventing heat transfer by conduction, convection, and radiation, which keeps the cup nice and cold for the drink (www.seletronic.com).

Other brand tumblers are available, and many companies have tested the alternatives to Stanley.   The HydroJug traveler, which is $39.99 (nearly $20 less for the comparable 40oz. Stanley), has proven to have a leak-proof design and temperature retention similar to the Stanley. Also, the Simple Modern Trek Tumbler, at the cost of less than $30, “…offers excellent temperature retention; it fluctuated by only one degree over 24 hours of testing” (goodhousekeeping.com).

In conclusion, the Stanley tumbler has been the topic of controversy and is a popular item in today’s society.  The decision about from which tumbler to drink definitely depends on the person.
